42nd Street
"Everybody" billboard, 1993

Kalman was instrumental in designing the
planning guidelines for the redevelopment
of New York's 42nd Street.

"I laid out a vision for the street, that it should be democratic, urban, exciting, and diverse - financially, economically, racially, and in every other way - that this is New York and it ought to be a great street. ...

"[T]here was a year when nothing happened, when the project was up for review, specification, and budgeting. [W]e wanted to show something was going on [so] we came up with the idea of an art show, using the street as a canvas. ... M&Co. did the 'Everybody' billboard. It was painted yellow with the giant word symbolizing what 42nd Street is for. ... It stayed up for about a year."
