Colors

In 1991, Tibor Kalman became editor-in-chief of a new internationally distributed magazine called Colors sponsored by the Italian clothing company Benetton.

Kalman thought "the magazine needed to be primarily visual, since reading is now an endangered pastime." He wanted to tell stories with pictures. What little wording the magazine contained was written in both English and Italian.

Colors features articles about things that are relevant everywhere, such as race, AIDS, religion, travel, sports.

The first issue featured a newborn baby on the cover. The last issue, the "Wordless issue," contained no words at all.
