Notes re YouTube

The Ohlone College Web Team is currently testing YouTube. Our YouTube home page is: http://www.youtube.com/ohlonecollege (no ending slash).

Summary of helpful information from the YouTube website (emphasis added):

  • Each video is limited to 10 minutes and 100 MB.
  • All videos uploaded to YouTube have a 100MB file size limit. The longer the video is, the more compression will be required to fit it into that size. For that reason, most videos on YouTube are under five minutes long and there is a 10-minute length limit for all videos.
  • YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats.
  • Files saved with a .mov extension are QuickTime movies. They are often created by iMovie on a Mac, but other video editing programs can also save in this format. QuickTime .mov files can be uploaded to YouTube without any additional conversion.
  • What’s the best format to upload for high quality?
    We recommend the following settings:

    • MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
    • 320×240 resolution
    • MP3 audio
    • 30 frames per second

Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look better on YouTube.

  • Why isn’t my video showing up in search?
Depending on site traffic, changes to video information can take 8 hours or more to show up in the search index after they’ve been uploaded, changed, or removed. This includes changes to tags, ratings, views, and comments. Please be patient — the video will show in the search index shortly.
  • Depending on your connection speed and the size of the video, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to upload a video. Generally, if you have a high-speed Internet connection you can expect the upload to take somewhere between 1-5 minutes for every 1MB. However, the experience is different for every user because of the variation in connection speeds.
  • Is there a limit to how many videos I can upload?
We don’t have any limit for the number of videos you can upload, and don’t foresee adding a ceiling anytime in the future. So start making videos and upload as many as you’d like—it’s more content for the whole YouTube community to enjoy!

Website Search Engines

The Ohlone College website search engine is currently ht://Dig which has been a satisfactory solution since May 2002. I am considering alternatives (open source or free to educational institutions) that can provide additional functionality.

WebGlimpse looks like a good alternative. Here is a comparison of WebGlimpse and ht://Dig. (”The Advanced, or Commercial version of Webglimpse is available free of charge to U.S. Government entities and to most educational users.”)

Google’s free search for universities is also available on our Advanced Search page, but Google indexes our website every 30 days or so. I prefer using a site search program that indexes our website on a schedule I set - which is currently once each day, 7 days a week. This frequent indexing allows new pages and updated content to be included in search results the next day.

Information about site search engines:

  • Search Tools for Web Sites and Intranets
  • A Comparison of Free Search Engine Software by Yiling Chen. “Abstract: This paper reviews nine search engine software packages -Alkaline, Fluid Dynamic, ht://Dig, Juggernautsearch, mnoGoSearch, Perlfect, SWISH-E, Webinator, and Webglimpse- which are free to users. Their features and functionalities are compared and contrasted with emphasis on searching mechanisms, crawler and indexer features, and searching features.”
